Meet Your Hosts

Morgan Torres

Melissa Black-Laws

At a very young age, Morgan realized her calling in life for health and fitness.  At sixteen, she was injured and was unable to workout.  At that moment, it occurred to her the importance of an active lifestyle.  That's when Morgan discovered her true passion - the Passion of Movement.

Morgan began her journey to become an instructor right out of high school when she moved to Maui to attend a trade school called Strong, Stretched and Centered.  She became a Personal Trainer, as well as an Aerobics, Yoga and Tai Chi instructor.  Shortly after her training, Morgan did a certification is Spinning and Water Aerobics.

One day she came across Pilates and fell in love.  This was a whole different way of movement.  Morgan had no idea how humbled she would become from the difficulties of the exercise.  This was her next journey.  Morgan left Maui for a year to study with Dorothee VanderWalle at Metropolitan Pilates in Seattle.

Morgan is constantly continuing her movement education.  She completed her teacher certification in Stott Pilates.  She feels that it brings Pilates to a whole different level.  "It is a great addition to the classical style of Pilates."

Morgan completed a 500 hour Yoga teacher training with Eddie Modestini and Nicki Doane at Maya Yoga, which is affiliated with Yoga Alliance.

Morgan truly believes that the body should move in many different ways.  There is no one exercise that works for everybody.  In addition, changing the way the body moves keeps the mind stimulated and the muscles challenged.  Which is how she came up with the name "Passion of Movement".

Morgan feels like the journey towards longevity starts by putting healthy foods into your mouth, and by keeping your body moving.  The phrase "you are what you eat" is a lot more crucial then people may realize.  The body is a reflection of what enters the mouth.  That's why doing the physical work goes hand in hand with nourishing the body
with healthy food.

Morgan loves what she does and enjoys helping people achieve their personal goals.  Morgan wants to share the benefits of healthy living with others.  "We only get one body, so we need to take care of it!"

Wanderluster & Soul Surfer,  Melissa was first introduced to yoga 22 years ago when she was 15. Canadian born in the midst of adolescence when most don't have a care in  the world, Melissa had to mature faster then she expected  due to the loss of many close family members. Growing up as an athlete, Melissa always felt a strong connection to physical movement as it offered a great mental release and an opportunity to stay in a playful mindset. Her experiences in life created her passion to want to help others.

She moved on to achieve two university degrees in the fields of Social Science & Psychology and committed herself to working in the social services sector for many years. In 2005 Melissa expanded her passion in the areas of traveling, surfing & yoga when she backpacked Australia. She was reintroduced to her yoga mat, became an outdoor enthusiast and fell in love with the ocean atmosphere. Life as a wanderluster had begun, A soul surfer had been formed and a new way of helping others on and off the yoga mat had been discovered.

As she continued her career in social services, she also continued to travel different parts of the world to stay connected to her love for surfing and yoga. During Melissa's travels she found herself on the beaches of Hawaii. A long way from Canada, but she felt a true sense of home. It was the magical island of Maui where Melissa truly began living life to the fullest as she rooted herself among the Hawaiian Islands.

In continued efforts to finding different outlets to helping others, Melissa decided to become a yoga educator. In 2012 she completed her yoga alliance compliant 200HR teacher training under the amazingly talented Vidya Jacqueline Heisel. Melissa is trained in asana, pranayama, anatomy, yogic texts & is qualified to teach Vinyasa Flow.

Not long after becoming certified, Melissa met Morgan as she was opening Passion of Movement and a friendship was formed immediately. Teaching at Morgans studio gave Melissa the confidence to expand and teach independently to a diverse population throughout Maui. Melissa & Morgan continued to support each others growth in all areas of life and would often talk about one day offering a yoga, fitness & adventure retreat.

Melissa's favorite motto is: "the best things in life aren't things, its the people you meet, the places you experience and the family and friends you surround yourself with"

Now years later, still having a "passion for movement" and a great friendship, Melissa & Morgan have teamed up to create: Maui Hawaii Retreats.
"We want Maui Hawaii Retreats to represent the power of human positivity and what you can achieve when you activate your body, balance your mind and consciously thrive within your environment".
